Hurricane Glass

Glass Diagram

Hurricane glass is made of two pieces of tempered glass with PVB in the center - that the PVB is bonded to the aluminum frame of the window. The glass can break - like a car windshield, into tiny little pieces, but it sticks to the film. Because the film is bonded to the frame and the frame is secured to the walls and are therefore stronger than normal windows (more screws, etc.) the wind which causes the damage does not enter the house. This window will withstand winds up to 146mph. Hurricane glass is the clear solution to your hurricane worries. For hi-rises, we calculate the pounds per square foot from the Florida Building Code Windload Chart to dictate which kind of hurricane glass you should use.

Can't I just get tempered glass? It withstands winds up to 70/80 mph?

Hurricane Glass

You can, but it does not meet with building codes. In order for high impact hurricane glass to meet code, you must consider: :

  • Distance the screws are placed from each other when attaching the product to the wall
  • Diameter
  • Depth
  • Length of the screws
  • Distance from the edge (edge distance) of the opening
  • Windloads for your particular home - the formula of the height from the ground, the width and height of the building, and the direction you're facing.

All these details will dictate which product we can use.
